What Should You Know Before Booking a Colombian Civil Marriage Representation and Celebration?

Documentary Review

Before confirming your Colombian Civil Marriage Representation and Celebration package, a legal document review is required. The cost is between $150 and $200 USD, which is deductible from the total service fee if the result is favorable.

Guest Attendance

If you plan to have up to 10 guests present during the civil ceremony, an additional fee applies to cover the logistical arrangements.

Interpreter Services

If either party does not speak Spanish fluently, an interpreter must be present during the ceremony. This service is available for an extra cost and can be coordinated through our team.

What Are the Legal Requirements for a Foreign Citizen in a Colombian Civil Marriage?
To legally marry in Colombia through our Civil Marriage service, the foreign national must submit specific legal documents that prove their identity, immigration status, and civil standing. Below are the key requirements for the process.
Authenticated Power of Attorney
One party must sign and authenticate a power of attorney, while the other must be present at the civil ceremony in Medellín. This document is only required if either the foreign bride or groom is unable to attend on the day the marriage is requested.
Passport
A clear copy of the foreign citizen’s valid passport is required.
Proof of Legal Immigration Status
If the foreigner is in Colombia, he/she must be in a regular immigration status (i.e., a PT stamp, a valid visa, or an approved extension of stay).
Birth Certificate
A physical copy of the birth certificate issued within the last three months. It must be apostilled and translated into Spanish. We offer certified translation services if needed.
Proof of Civil Status
Depending on the individual’s marital history:
  • Single:
  • A certificate of singleness. If residing in Colombia for over six months, an extrajudicial sworn declaration may be used.
  • Divorced:
  • Divorce decree, properly apostilled and translated.
  • Second Marriage:
  • Death certificate of the previous spouse, apostilled and translated.
Children or Assets
If the foreign national has minor children or owns assets acquired before the marriage, a solemn inventory of assets is required. This must be prepared with a lawyer and signed before a notary. This is an optional add-on service we can provide.
What Documents Are Required from the Colombian Partner for a Civil Marriage?
The Colombian citizen participating in the marriage must present updated legal documents that confirm their identity and eligibility to marry. These documents are required by Colombian notarial law. Below is the full list of requirements for the Colombian partner.
Cédula de Ciudadanía
A legible copy of the valid Colombian national identification card.
Birth Certificate
A certified copy of the civil birth certificate issued within the last month.
Proof of Previous Marital Status (If Applicable)
If this is a second marriage:
  • Termination:
  • Documents proving the termination of the previous marriage, divorce, or death certificate.
  • Dissolution:
  • Proof of the dissolution of the marital or patrimonial partnership.
Children or Assets
If the Colombian citizen has minor children or has acquired property before marriage, a solemn inventory of assets is required. This legal document must be handled before a notary with the assistance of a lawyer. Available as an additional service.

What are the requirements of the Marriage Visa?
  1. Passport: Original valid passport with at least 2 blank pages and 6 months of validity.
  2. Digital photo: 1 digital photo 3 x 4 cm white background without accessories. Physical/printed photos are not accepted.
  3. Marriage: Civil Registry of Marriage COLOMBIANO* updated.
  4. Cédula de Ciudadanía: Copy of the Colombian national’s identity card.
  5. Letter of request: Application letter signed by the Colombian and power of attorney duly authenticated.
  6. Evidence: Supports that demonstrate the veracity and antiquity of the relationship.
  7. Migratory movements: Certificate of Migratory Movements of both.
What marriage options are there in Colombia?

In Colombia, several marriage options are available, including civil marriage, religious marriage, and common-law marriage. Civil marriage is legally recognized and conducted before a state official, such as a notary or a judge. A Religious leader performs religious marriage and holds legal validity if registered with civil authorities afterward. On the other hand, common-law marriage is a cohabitation without a formal contract. Still, it can be legally recognized after a certain period of continuous cohabitation through a judicial process. Each option has specific requirements and procedures that must be followed for legal recognition in Colombia.

How can I get a cédula after marrying a Colombian?

To obtain a cédula (national identification card) after marrying a Colombian, you need to ensure your marriage is legally recognized in Colombia, apply for a residence visa as the spouse of a Colombian citizen by submitting required documents like your marriage certificate and passport to the Colombian consulate or embassy, and once your visa is approved, register with the Colombian authorities and apply for your cédula at the nearest Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil (National Civil Registry) office.

How do I get an apostille from the US?

To obtain an apostille for a U.S. document, you must first identify the issuing state of the document. If it’s a state-issued document, like a birth certificate or marriage certificate, you’ll need to contact the Secretary of State’s office where it was issued. For federal documents, such as FBI background checks, the apostille is handled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. If you’re already in Colombia, expatgroup.co offers assistance in preparing and submitting apostille requests for U.S. documents, ensuring the process is completed efficiently and correctly.

Is a background check mandatory for obtaining a Colombian visa?

Background check is only required for some visas. But even if criminal records are mandatory only for certain visas, such as the retirement visa, the Colombian government has been requiring them as additional documentation for almost all visas, including marriage, investment, business, and digital nomad visa applications.
